Do Not Fear, Good Fats are Here

The stigma of fat is explored from two perspectives. First, science writer Barbara Moran reviews the evolution of the low-fat mantra in The Boston Globe. Moran delves into decades of the fat stigma concluding, “The war on fat was perhaps the most ferocious battle in a larger war on food, from which the survivors are emerging confused, angry and more obese than ever.” She suggests replacing foods high in saturated fats with unsaturated fats, such as canola oil, will lower the risk of heart disease.

Secondly, Carrie Dennet, RDN, lends credibility to help shake-off-the-shackles of fat phobia in the Washington Post. Dennet explains that the omega-3 fat, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is found in plant-based foods like canola oil. She references the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which recommend focusing on eating foods rich in unsaturated fats, while limiting foods high in saturated fat.
